Protected Zone of Guacimo–Pococi Water Sources

The Protected Zone of Acuiferos Guacimo – Pococi is an important area for water production and supply. The protected zone extension covers the counties of Guapiles and Jimenez, canton of Pococí, and the county of Guacimo, canton with the same name.

General Information

The main purpose of its creation was to protect watershed that supply potable water for the population of Guacimo and Pococi cantons.

Additionally, deforestation rates in the area were provoking erosion and pollution problems down the streams.

There are many rural towns around the protected zone. These towns provoke some kind of pressures over the natural resources, especially soil, forest, and water.

Recently, people are more aware about environmental conservation issues.

Flora and Fauna

The area has an average precipitation of 5500 millimeters per year. There is a large variety of plants and trees typically from the region.

Some birds and small mammals can be found in this protected zone.

Other Facts

This protected zone has no services and facilities for tourism activities. However, a trip for its surroundings will let you have an extraordinary natural landscape and a rural view.
